What do you do when someone copies your blog content?

You must have heard the word plagiarism. Ever wonder what does it mean and why we should know about it ?

Any of the following is considered plagiarism.

* turning in someone else’s work as your own
* copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit
* giving incorrect information about the source
* changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit
* copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of your work, whether you give credit or not

In other words, plagiarism is an act of fraud. It involves both stealing someone else’s work and lying about it afterward (either by refusing or by not giving due credit).

Now, are you wondering why am I talking about this ?

Well, like you I am also a blogger and have two blogs. I happened to be a victim of plagiarism many times. Several of my creations have been lifted by others without my knowledge.

When I spoke about it to Nirav Sanghavi, the founder of BlogAdda.com, he requested me to write on the topic and I thank him for giving me this opportunity.

Here I will explain you the legal aspects, implications and my experiences and how to deal with it.

The expression of original ideas is considered intellectual property, and is protected by copyright laws, just like original inventions. Almost all forms of expression fall under copyright protection as long as they are recorded in some way such as a book, a computer file, a painting or even a blog.

At one time, a work was protected by copyright only if it included a copyright trademark (the © symbol). However, now as per the laws, our works are by default copyright protected with or without the inclusion of this symbol.

Anyone who reproduces copyrighted material improperly can be termed as violator of the Copyright Act and can be prosecuted in a court of law. It doesn’t matter if you intend to plagiarize or not, ignorance is never an excuse.

In the eyes of the law any form of plagiarism is an offense that demands punitive action.

Most cases of plagiarism are considered misdemeanors and are punishable by fines of $100 to $50,000 and up to one year jail-term.

But in a case where a plagiarist copies and earns more than $2,500 from copyrighted material, plagiarism is considered a serious crime. He or she may face up to 100 times ($250,000) in fines and up to ten years in jail.

However, in India the laws are not so well defined. Generally it is acted upon in haphazard manner after somebody complains or the media cries over the issue. Sometimes if it takes a shape of copyright infringement, it takes a serious turn.

What do I do when someone steals my material ?

I take a softer approach in the beginning. I start with leaving a comment on the plagiarist’s blog mentioning his/her mistake and the consequences. In most cases, it suffices since the plagiarist is ignorant about it.

In some cases, the plagiarist tries to be extra smart and keeps deleting your & your readers’ comments. A little humiliation in front of his/her readers is the key then.

If possible, write a post on your blog citing the case and invite his readers there.

There was only one case who did not accept that he did any wrong, rather accused me of stealing his material !! But I had enough evidences to prove my point and had to ultimately report to his blogging platform that definitely did not approve such misdeeds. His readers also confronted him and he had to publicly apologize on my blog. By that time it was too late and his entire blog was deleted and he was banned from further blogging.

I am glad that till date I did not have to resort to the ultimate step of knocking the doors of court but I’ll not hesitate if the need arises.

How to prevent plagiarism

1. Display copyright policy or badge on your blog
2. Watermark all your photos
3. Enable word verification to avoid spam
4. And keep your eyes open

How can you copy if you have to copy ?

1. Put within quotation mark everything that comes directly from the text
2. Paraphrase but be sure you are not just rearranging or replacing a few words. Changing only the words of an original source is NOT sufficient to prevent plagiarism. You must cite a source whenever you borrow ideas as well as words
3. Give credit to source, but sometimes giving credit is not enough and they expect you to ask for their permission. Check for any such copyright policy.

How can I make my blog load faster?

The speed at which your blog loads is critical to attracting more readers to your blog. If your blog takes a long time to load, many readers may leave your blog before they have the chance to read it. Here are a few tips and tricks that will help your blog load faster and attract more users:

Posts

Your blog's load time can be affected by the number of posts you display on your main page. You can easily edit the number of posts displayed of the main page from the Settings | Formatting tab. You can then select the number of posts you want to display on the main page. We recommend displaying 10 or fewer posts on the main page.

Third Party JavaScript and Links

For optimal blog load speed, i recommend using Google/Blogger widgets, JavaScipt and links. However, if you need to use third party JavaScipt and links, your blog will load much faster if you put all JavaScript at the bottom of your blog. If you have third party JavaScript and links in your sidebar, put them in at the bottom of the sidebar.

Images and Media

The more images, videos and other multi-media you have on your blog the longer it will take to load. However, images and other multimedia are important to attracting users to your blog, so it is important to optimize the load speed of your images and media. Here are a few tips to increase the load speed of your media:

  • Decrease the size of your images or use thumbnails that link to the full-size image.
  • If you use third party images, consider uploading them to Picasa Web Albums via the Blogger post editor.
  • If you have a large number of images to display, you can upload all your images (from a vacation or event) to a Picasa Web Album and link to the album in your post or sidebar.

Other suggestions

  • If you've added any custom CSS to your blog, make sure you put it at the top of the page.
  • The most important content of your blog that catches readers attention should load the quickest. To help you identify which items are taking the longest to load you can use Stopwatch. To use Stopwatch, enter your blog's URL into the text box and click "Start StopWatch". Stopwatch will then open your blog in a frame and will record the time it takes for everything on your blog to load, including images, videos, widgets, etc. Take note of the items that take the longest to load and modify them appropriately using my suggestions.

Mumbai blasts..

Hi,

I just signed an urgent message calling for unity following the attacks in Mumbai. Read the information below - Thanks

--------------------------

Dear friends across India and the world,

We're all feeling the shock of the awful attacks in Mumbai. All our hearts go out to the victims and their families.

The attacks were aimed at our people, our prosperity and our peace. But their top target was something else: our unity. If these attacks cause us to turn on each other in hatred and conflict, the terrorists will have won. They know that hatred and chaos feed on division. As radical extremists, their only hope of winning is by turning the rest of us against each other.

Let's deny them that victory. We're launching a message to extremists on all sides and all our political leaders, one that will soon be published in newspapers across India and Pakistan. The message is that these tactics have failed, that we're more united than ever, united in our love and support to each other, determined to work together against terror and call on our leaders to do the same. If millions of people sign it, our message will be unmistakable, click below to sign it and please spread the message:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/india_undivided/98.php/?cl_tf_sign=1

It's time to speak out, let's do it together.

Thanks

Google Phone Hit by "Reboot" Bug

A bug has been discovered on the G1 mobile phone, which runs Google's Android software. The bug means that anything typed into the phone shortly after it is turned on is interpreted by the software as a command.

The bug was discovered during a text conversation between two phone users. One of the participants typed the word "reboot" into the text message, and the phone shut down and rebooted. Google has developed a fix for the bug.

The bug was reported on the Google problem shooting forum, with user jdhorvat stating: "I had just rebooted my phone and the first thing I typed was a response to her text which simply stated "Reboot" - which, to my surprise, rebooted my phone."

Blogger's tools

Like an e mail id, blogs are fast becoming an essential requirement for organizations and individuals.an offshoot of this trend is the mushrooming of tools that add more value to a blog.i am putting up few such tools for you people.

1. when a visitor reads a blog post and finds it useful , he/she may develop an urge to immediately update his/her friends. A blogger should exploit this potential enthusiasm of the reader as it might funnel more relevant traffic to his blog. This necessitates your blog to have the required tools that enable a reader to contact his/her friends via the channel of his/her choice (IM and e-mail) with ease. The ‘Tell-a-friend’ widget from Socialtwist http://socialtwist.com/ is developed to meet this requirement. The widget allows a blog’s visitor to invoke a mail service (like gmail, yahoo mail) or an IM service (like GoogleTalk and MSN) without leaving the blog and send a message to selected friends in one shot.

2. Though English is a global language, a large share of netizens is from non-English speaking countries. This means, if a blog or web site can provide some means to translate the web page content to other languages, it could attract more readers. The free web translation widget, ConveyThis ( http://www.conveythis.com/), ably serves this need. Once embedded on your blog/site, ‘ConveyThis’ helps the site visitor translate the blog’s content to any language with the help of popular language translation services like Google and Babelfish.

3. Another tool worth embedding on your blog is the real-time site traffic stats feed provided by Feedjit (http://feedjit.com/). Once placed on a blog, the tool displays the details of each of the visitors to it (like the page visited, visitor’s geographical location and the like).

4. Yet another service worth a look in this context is Wowzio ( http://www.wowzio.com/), which provides a variety of slideshow widgets. Some or all your blog posts may have photographs attached to it. If all these photographs can be combined into a slide show (with each slide linked to its corresponding blog entry), blog readers would easily get an overview of its content by just watching the slideshow. Wozio’s slideshow widget helps one easily accomplish this.

u can find all this in my blog now..hope u find this information useful n make use of it.

India wins back Border-Gavaskar Trophy

India capped a tight bowling display to record a crushing 172-run victory over Australia in the fourth and final Test and wrap up the series 2-0 in Nagpur.

Australia was bowled out for 209 on the final afternoon as they chased an unlikely 382 to suffer their first Test series defeat since the 2005 Ashes in England.

It was also India's first Test series win over Australia in seven years as they clinched the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Indian fast bowler Ishant Sharma was named man of the series.

Web based calculator

Looking for a good calculator that can not only do basic arithmetic but also can do a variety of functions such as unit conversion, solving equations, scientific computations and so on? If so, take a look at the free on-line service ‘ecalc’ ( http://www.ecalc.com/). For those of you who wish to use it off-line, the service offers a desktop version of the calculator as well.

Windows Sysinternals (http://technet.microsoft. com/en-us/sysinternals/default.aspx) is a suite of tools that help us manage Windows system with ease. The tool pack contains useful utilities such as Autoruns (for obtaining/managing the list of programs loaded when the Windows starts) and Process-monitor. Anyone can download and use these programs for free (http://live.sysinternals.com/). However, if you are troubleshooting an unknown machine and averse to install the tools, the sysinternals live service helps you run them directly from Windows explorer.

For this, enter ‘\\live.sysinternals.com’ into Windows explorer’s input box and press the Enter key. Now, you will find a set of folders (like Tools) that contain the various sysinternal tools listed on the Explorer window. To run a tool, access the appropriate folder and click on the tool’s icon.

Jumbo retires in style....

The camera goes clicking away, and at the end of the day we find that all the major landmarks by every Indian cricketer is well captured to remain unforgettable memories. But who is there to capture his achievements which are so many in number? Well, his landmarks are captured in every Indian's heart.

Anil Kumble, one of the greatest Indian spinners, infact one of the best spinners of the world, is surely not someone who can be forgotten easily. He may have surprisingly announced his retirement after the third test between India and Australia at the Feroshah Kotla, but Kotla shall always remember his 10 wicket haul against Pakistan in a single innings on the very same sand. 10/74 - these are bowling figures that one will get to see once in a lifetime.
An emboidment of simplicity, a statue of respect, a symbol of perfection, and an idol of commitment, Kumble has brought Indian cricket a long way.Indian cricket has grown with him. Carrying the burden of the Indian spin attack for 18 long yeras is a daunting task by itself, and doing it with such grace is as commendable an achievement as any other. I still doubt anyone else put in his position will even come close to matching him.
Well, think of Anil Kumble and the first word that probably crops up on people's mind is 'comitment'. He has defined commitment in the way that every common man understands it. I wouldn't be surprised if the Oxford Dictionary plans to substitute the noun 'commitment' with the proper noun 'Anil Kumble'.
The Indian skipper's cap may have been adorned by him quite late in his career, but this is no indication of his contribution to the team till then. He has always been the most reliable bowler in the Indian squad who has many a times risen hopes after being down in the dumps. He has silently SPUN a magical web around himself that makes him ever so trustable.
Anil Kumble may have retired after 18 years of international cricket, but his cricket still lives. He may not find a place in the Indian aquad anymore, but no Indian's heart is ever too full for him.

do you people think i wrote this?????........

yup guessed correctly, no way right...
this post was written for my blog by chithru, the cricket freak.. :D

It is a 99.95% challenge.........

It is a 99.95% challenge that u will have a wrong answer to the question
asked in the passage.

Once there was loving couple traveling in a bus in a mountainous area. They
decided to get down at some place. After the couple got down at some place
the bus moved on. As the bus moved on, a huge rock fell on the bus from the
mountain and crushed the bus to crumbs. Everybody on board was killed. The
couple upon seeing that, said, "We wish we were on that bus" Why do u think
they said that?

If they had remained on the bus instead of deciding to get down, the
resulting time delay could have been avoided and the rock would have fallen
after the bus had passed ..!!!

Think positive in life always and look for opportunities when u can help Others......
Many times in life, the opposite of Success is not Failure, it is
Quitting.

Winners never
Quit !!

Quitters never Win....

Cheers

Hello

saw the movie today n a brief review about it.
Wonder what went wrong? For, boy wonder, Chetan Bhagat's pulp fiction page- turners literally read like a Bollywood masala flick. Reading his recent Three Mistakes ... was almost like watching a Hindi film, complete with a fire and brimstone climax that belted out all the right messages about bhaichara (fraternity), ekta (unity), dosti (friendship) and humanism. One Night at a Call Centre too has the mandatory ingredients, including a brush with divinity. And the devil too! Not forgetting the break-ups, link-ups and patriotic pulp that generally assures foolproof drama. Not this time, however. The problem lies not so much in the performances as in the turgid screenplay and the tedious plot development which transform the film into an uninspired celluloid adaptation of a successful book..

CHANDRAYAAN mission...

proud to be an indian. a brief description that i found about it. its really awesome when u read more about it.
u can visit http://www.isro.org/chandrayaan/htmls/home.htm for further information.

Mission Sequence

  • 1) Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft would be launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, SHAR, Sriharikota by PSLV-XL (PSLV-C11) in an highly elliptical initial orbit (IO) with perigee (nearest point to the Earth) of about 257 km and an apogee (farthest point from the Earth) of about 22,858 km.

  • 2) After a few revolutions in the initial orbit, the spacecraft's Liquid Apogee Motor (LAM) firing would be done, when the spacecraft is near perigee, to raise the apogees to 37,421 km and 73,925 km respectively.

  • 3) Subsequently, the LAM is fired to take the Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft to extremely high elliptical orbit with apogees 199,277 km and 269,201 km. Later the spacecraft would be raised to an orbit with 1,019 km perigee and 386,194 km apogee.

  • Once the Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft reaches the vicinity of the Moon, the spacecraft is slowed down sufficiently so as to enable the gravity of the moon capture it into an elliptical orbit (LC). After a careful and detailed observation the height of the spacecraft's orbit will be finally lowered to its intended 100 km circular polar orbit. Following this, the Moon Impact Probe (MIP) would be ejected from Chandrayaan-1 to impact on the lunar surface. Afterwards, all the scientific instruments/payloads are commissioned sequentially and Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft explores the Moon with its array of instruments for two years.

    congrats to sachin!!!

Mohali, Oct 18 Sachin Tendulkar, playing in his 50th Test innings against Australia, Friday became the leading run-getter - 12,027 - in the history of Test cricket, bettering West Indian Brian Lara's aggregate of 11,953 in 131 Tests.

Sachin, when on 61, became the first batsman in Test annals to amass 12,000 runs in the longer version of the game. At the time of achieving the feat, his average was 54.29.

Other statistical highlights on the first day of the second cricket against Australia:

    * Sachin's 10th fifty against Australia is his 50th fifty in Test cricket.

    * Sachin is the second Indian and the fourth in Test annals to have registered 50 fifties or more in Test Cricket, joining Allan Border (63), Rahul Dravid (53) and Steve Waugh (50).

    * Tendulkar, during his innings of 88, has established another record. He is now the leading run-getter at Mohali - 547 runs at an average of 54.70 in eight Tests, eclipsing Rahul Dravid's tally of 509 (ave.56.55) in seven Tests.

best part was we were able to watch the match as it was screened in the college wi fi n it was really great.the whole hostel n campus was in claps when sachin reached the record. hats off to him.
