Trek to Venkatagiri Hills!

Before I start, let me just insert a statutory warning:
Trekking can get intensely addictive with EMPERORS. Indulge yourself in with care. Whoever agrees with the above cautionary note can proceed to read further.
Destination: Venkatagiri hills, Andhra Pradesh
Date: 19-20 November, 2011
Difficulty level: Moderate +

As the night gave way to the waking hours of the dawn, the sidewalk in front of Nathans café, Koyambedu got buzzling with a couple of energetic folks carrying their trekking gears around 12.30 am, sipping cardamom flavoured hot tea. Soon the groups from Tidel Park, Madhya Kailash and Guindy joined us in front of the café. As usual the regulars got into a friendly huddle in gaiety and started churning out the details of past adventures and the ones to come soon. Newcomers were quickly introduced to the group and all were ready, set to explore and celebrate the spirit of CTC at the Venkatagiri hills.

With a little bit of delays here and there, all the undertaking forms signed and cash paid, Arun - Prem signaled all of us to get into the cars. We had Balaji’s Mahindra Thar jeep, Praveen’s Volkswagen Vento along with good old Maruthi Swift this time! All gears, water bottles, food etc, were put inside the cars and we were ready to take leave. Strict instructions from Arun to the others driving the cars to “ follow the lead car and not miss the route.”
We had to manage heavy traffic on the highways due to a road accident and take a different route. After passing through various toll booths, trucks, and villages we reached Tada where we again got delayed due to traffic. Meanwhile, we all were introducing ourselves and getting to know each other in the jeep where I was seated. Some were listening to songs, some were talking about their previous experiences and others concentrated on the road coming ahead. When we reached the access road to Venkatagiri village we stopped for a while and took a small break. People with DSLR’s were busy shooting the sunrise, others with bottles in their hands went to off to remote places! :P

The common gears and food stuffs were taken out and distributed equally. Excellent food along with essentials like fruits, rotis ,pickle, buns and jam, chocolates etc, were grabbed up by everyone according to the quantity mentioned by the organizers. Santosh was spot on when he later renamed CTC as 'Chennai Trekking and Eating Club'. We were overwhelmed with the extensive food that we carried along that filled our tummies which would make any luxurious buffet serving look pale in comparison. If we were to rate the culinary experience in all of our treks combined this one trek could beat them all hands down. Big cheers to Arun and all the folks who had a hand in the food department!

Even after all this, as we proceeded to Venkatagiri village, we stopped by in few shops to have breakfast. We had super soft idlies and vadas there. The morning looked crisp, fresh and the rays of sun yet to shine through the blue sky and clouds scooting by gently in the breeze. It was further charged by the super energetic chatter that started by Santosh and his shouts of “Oru solo photo machi” being the centre of attention. With Santosh and his solo team engaging the whole group and stepping up the entertainment vibe, this trek looked already ‘ON’!

This being a trek onto hills with no streams made it quite a challenge for all of us. We had to manage with just 3 liters of water till we could get on the top of the peak. Finally we started to move one behind the other following the trail. We were climbing up really high, and within few meters of climb you can actually feel the rise in altitude. Breathing gets heavier and your pace slows down. Few start taking help of the sticks nearby for their support and others moved on slowly following each other and clinging on to trees, branches and stones for support. Introductions, photographs, jokes and water sipping followed up with an intense climb getting difficult by each step. At last we reached the first resting spot, which had a small naturally formed water pond. We all were shocked as no water was flowing through it and imagined the same on the top of the hills where we expected a small stream. Since a very few of us made it early to the resting spot, had to wait for others. We decide to have lunch here and everyone was busy sharing the jam n pickle packets with the rotis.

After few more group clicks, gossips and power naps we further proceeded to the top of the peak. After braving severe cramps on both the legs, hands pricked with thorns, with a heavy breathing and tired body, we reached the top of the peak. The view was mind blowing and awesome. All the tiredness vanished within minutes due to the chill gentle wind hitting on our faces and the breath taking views of the Venkatagiri village and the hills around us. We all were shocked to see the remains of an old fort on top of the peak which was built by the robbers to store their looty. We were informed by Arun later that this was the quickest group to reach the top of Venkatagiri peak ever in CTC until now. I was amazed at Chella sir’s speed and fitness at this age.

Next we started off with a cascade of activities. Some were getting all the water bottles together to fill it up from the small stream, while few were busy collecting dry logs for the camp fire. Others were setting up tents, unpacking the things needed for cooking and as usual few others started clicking pictures. As the sun was setting, it started to become more cold and windy. Arun and co got busy with cutting vegetables and cooking some mouth watering hot and delicious vegetable soup and biriyani. Three huge tents for most of them to sleep were erected. All sleeping bags, mufflers, jackets and torches were out. Finally Senthil called out for few us to assemble with the bowls for the soup. It felt really warm to have the hot soup on that cold night. Next came the delicious biriyani and within minutes it was all over. With our tummies filled, the happy bunch of us started the camp fire activity. People had collected loads of wooden logs and as far as I know, this was the biggest camp fire set up by anyone in CTC. Three cheers to all the emperors!! We had nice fun dancing around, posing for snaps, eating pop-corn, listening to Rakesh play the flute and of course the endless jokes on Santosh! After few hours of fun and frolic, everyone was tired and decided to hit their sacks to energize themselves for the trip back down the next morning. It was a very chilly night and dew was found everywhere around the tent. Anything that we touched was wet. The morning dawned upon and it was amazing to let the sun’s rays fall onto you. When Senthil was busy preparing tea for all of us, another photo session started off.

After a long walk and talk with Prem and Adithya Verma, it was time to pack up.Prem I am not revealing the games we played to find out who will fill the water :D . Hot mouth watering maggi for breakfast was ready and as usual it was licked clean from bowls in minutes. We cleaned up all the trash, packed and rolled the tarpaulins, filled water and got ready for the steep descent down. With the few final clicks on the top we started our journey back down.We were really fast as climbing down was very easy compared to the up. We were asked to wait near the first resting spot as everyone could have introduction session amongst ourselves and for a final group snap. Once everyone reached there, it was fun to let everyone talk about themselves and atlast after the final full 32 member group picture was taken, we decided to quicken our pace and get down as soon as possible.

Arun and Prem planned for an exploration of a waterfall near the foot hills. Another few hours and we were down near the foot hills. One group missed the trail and got lost at the foot hills but with the help of Arun’s whistle, google maps supporting I-Phones and Balaji’s Mahindra Thar, we were all able to regroup soon.Then it was decided to proceed further for the exploration of another waterfalls close by. By this time many were tired and hence only 16 out of 32 decided to go further. We bid goodbye to the group that left and with the help of Balaji’s exceptional driving, we drove off-road for about 8kms to reach the waterfalls. It was amazing to dip yourselves into it after two days of water crunch! After a quick dip and few clicks we left the place as it was getting dark and late. All of us were very equally tired too. After we reached the village, we had an awesome dinner at the village hotel. After paying the bills it was now time for us to bid final goodbyes and of course exchanged our contact numbers. Need to thank Balaji to dropping me back home.

It was indeed an awesome trek to cherish with the ‘EMPERORS’. Personal thanks for every one of them for making this trip a big successful and enjoyable one. Kudos to Arun and Prem for organizing such an ultimate fun filled and one of the most memorable trips of our lives. Looking forward to more such treks and explorations.

A woman came home from work late, tired and irritated, to find her 5-year old son waiting for her at the door.
SON: 'Mummy, may I ask you a question?'
MOM: 'Yeah sure, what it is?' replied the woman.
SON: 'Mummy, how much do you make an hour?'
MOM: 'That's none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?' the woman said angrily.
SON: 'I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?'
MOM: 'If you must know, I make Rs. 50 an hour.'
SON: 'Oh,' the little boy replied, with his head down.
SON: 'Mummy, may I please borrow Rs.25?'
The mother was furious, 'If the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I don't work hard everyday for such childish frivolities.'

The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door..

The woman sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy's questions. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money?

After about an hour or so, the woman had calmed down , and started to think:
Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that Rs.25.00 and he really didn't ask for money very often.The woman went to the door of the little boy's room and opened the door.

'Are you asleep, son?' She asked.
'No Mummy, I'm awake,' replied the boy.
'I've been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier' said the woman. 'It's been a long day and I took out my aggravation on you. Here's the Rs.25 you asked for.'

The little boy sat straight up, smiling. 'Oh, thank you Mummy!' he yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled up bills.

The woman saw that the boy already had money, started to get angry again.
The little boy slowly counted out his money, and then looked up at his mother.
'Why do you want more money if you already have some?' the mother grumbled.
'Because I didn't have enough, but now I do,' the little boy replied.
'Mummy, I have Rs.50 now. Can I buy an hour of your time? Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you.'

The mother was crushed. She put his arms around her little son, and she begged for his forgiveness.

It's just a short reminder to all of you working so hard in life. We should not let time slip through our fingers without having spent some time with those who really matter to us, those close to our hearts. Do remember to share at least that Rs.50 worth of your time with someone you love.

Story of Appreciation!!

Well there has been an extensive gap between the time i last blogged here. Probably the delay was due to the fact that I wanted the post to be exclusive and very different and I was waiting all this while to get a topic that would spark such a post! And at last, I found this mail a very interesting and touching one which i would like you all to read through!!

One young academically excellent person went to apply for a managerial position in a big company.He passed the first interview,the director had to make
the last decision.

The director discovered from the CV that the youth's academic achievements were excellent all the way, from the secondary school until the postgraduate research, never had a year when he did not score.

The director asked, "Did you obtain any scholarships in school?" the
youth answered "none".The director asked, " Was it your father who paid for your school fees?" The youth answered, "My father passed away when I was one year old, it was my mother who paid for my school fees. The director asked, " Where did your mother work?" The youth answered, "My mother worked as clothes cleaner. The director requested the youth to show his hands. The youth showed a pair of hands that were smooth and perfect.

The director asked, " Have you ever helped your mother wash the clothes
before?" The youth answered, "Never, my mother always wanted me to study and read more books. Furthermore, my mother can wash clothes faster than me. The director said, "I have a request. When you go back today, go and clean your mother's hands, and then see me tomorrow morning.*

The youth felt that his chance of landing the job was high. When he went back, he happily requested his mother to let him clean her hands. His mother felt strange, happy but with mixed feelings, she showed her hands to the kid.

The youth cleaned his mother's hands slowly. His tear fell as he did that. It was the first time he noticed that his mother's hands were so wrinkled, and there were so many bruises in her hands. Some bruises were so painful that his mother
shivered when they were cleaned with water.

This was the first time the youth realized that it was this pair of hands that washed the clothes everyday to enable him to pay the school fee. The bruises in the mother's hands were the price that the mother had to pay for his graduation, academic excellence and his future.

After finishing the cleaning of his mother hands, the youth quietly washed all the remaining clothes for his mother.That night, mother and son talked for a very long time.

Next morning, the youth went to the director's office.The Director noticed the tears in the youth's eyes, asked: " Can you tell me what have you done and learned yesterday in your house?" The youth answered, " I cleaned my mother's hand, and also finished cleaning all the remaining clothes'

The Director asked, " please tell me your feelings."

The youth said,
Number 1, I know now what is appreciation. Without my mother, there would not be the successful me today.
Number 2, by working together and helping my mother, only I now realize how difficult and tough it is to get something done.
Number 3, I have come to appreciate the importance and value of family relationship.

The director said, " This is what I am looking for to be my manager.
I want to recruit a person who can appreciate the help of others, a person who knows the sufferings of
others to get things done, and a person who would not put money as his only goal in life. You are hired.

Later on, this young person worked very hard, and received the respect of his subordinates. Every employee worked diligently and as a team. The company's performance improved tremendously.

A child, who has been protected and habitually given whatever he wanted, would develop "entitlement mentality" and would always put himself first. He would be ignorant of his parent's efforts. When he starts work, he assumes that every person must listen to him, and when he becomes a manager, he would never know the sufferings of his employees and would always blame others. For this kind of people, who may be good academically, may be successful for a while, but eventually would not feel sense of achievement. He will grumble and be full of hatred and fight for more. If we are this kind of protective parents, are we really showing love or are we destroying the kid instead?*

You can let your kid live in a big house, eat a good meal, learn piano, watch a big screen TV. But when you are cutting grass, please let them experience it. After a meal, let them wash their plates and bowls together with their brothers and sisters. It is not because you do not have money to hire a maid, but it is because you want to love them in a right way. You want them to understand, no matter how rich their parents are, one day their hair will grow gray, same as the mother of that young person. The most important thing is your kid learns how to appreciate the effort and experience the difficulty and learns the ability to work with others to get things done.

This should be posted in every school

Love him or hate him , he sure hits the nail on the head with this!

Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1 : Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2 : The world doesn't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3 : You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4 : If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss

Rule 5 : Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Rule 6 : If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault , so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7 : Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8 : Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer.This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9 : Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10 : Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11 : Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

This post here on my blog comes after a really long time. These lines made me shape my life so much and hence I thought it apt to share it with you people too!! Feel free to comment about it.

The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us, to get to know someone we didn't already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being. She said, 'Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I'm eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?'

I laughed and enthusiastically responded, 'Of course you may!' and she gave me a giant squeeze. 'Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?' I asked.

She jokingly replied, 'I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, and have a couple of kids.' 'No seriously,' I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age.
'I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!' she told me. After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake. We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this 'time machine' as she shared her wisdom and experience with me. Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up. At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I'll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three by five cards on the floor. Frustrated and a little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said, 'I'm sorry I'm so jittery. I gave up beer for Lent and this whiskey is killing me! I'll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know. 'As we laughed she cleared her throat and began, 'We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing.

There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead and don't even know it! There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don't do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty-eight. Anybody! can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding opportunity in change. Have no regrets. The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets. 'She concluded her speech by courageously singing 'The Rose.' She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives. At the year's end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those months ago.
One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep.
Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be.
REMEMBER, GROWING OLDER IS MANDATORY. GROWING UP IS OPTIONAL. We make a Living by what we get. We make a Life by what we give.

God promises a safe landing, not a calm passage. If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it.

Google gives search results pages a makeover

Google's new search results page redesign highlights search options on the left side, in living color.

Starting Wednesday, Google users will see something very different on search results pages as the world's leading Internet search company trots out one of its most significant redesigns in years.

Google search result pages will get a lot more colorful as Google formally introduces a redesign it has been testing for several years. It's not a huge surprise since Google has been actively testing the design with users for several months, and testing for this particular revision dates back even further, said John Wiley, senior user experience designer for Google.

With the new look, Google is emphasizing the menu of search options that had previously been hidden on the left-side rail of the search results pages. First unveiled in May 2009, search options required a searcher to click on a "show options" link at the top of the page. Now they will be permanently affixed to the left rail, and Google will surface different search options based on whether they are relevant to the query, Wiley said.

For example, a search for "red shoes" would produce the usual set of results, but on the left rail, Google will surface a link to Google's shopping search pages. In the same vein, a search for "NFL draft" would surface news and real-time updates on that rail. Users can access the full list of search options by clicking on "more" but will see a changing list of highlighted options on the left rail for different queries.

And those options themselves will be quite visible: Google is using strong colors to highlight those options, in what Wiley called "a modern crisp clean look." Even Google's logo is getting in on the act, with a subtle overhaul that brightens the colors and drops the shadowing cast by the letters.

Google's new logo, which eliminates the shadows behind the letters and uses brighter colors.

"This was one of our larger visual experiments we've ever run at Google," Wiley said. The company tested different designs in the wild, with members of the public in Google's testing labs, and its usual "dog-fooding" process among employees, and assembled enough data on preferences to put together the final product.

Google has been criticized for this data-driven approach to design in the past, perhaps most prominently by former employee Douglas Bowman, who in departing the company last year wrote "I won't miss a design philosophy that lives or dies strictly by the sword of data."

While not responding directly to Bowman's concerns in light of the new design, Wiley pointed out that individual designers at Google have to use their intuition to figure out which kinds of visual experiments to test before subjecting those tests to data analysis. "I think that we are very lucky at Google to have the resources to be able to run the kinds of experiments that give us great data," he said.

Google is also changing the way search tools and search refinements appear on the left hand side of its search results page. A search for "rolling stones" will trigger a list of results under the header "something different," which in this case would bring up other classic rock bands such as Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin.

The changes will appear on a rolling basis to most users over the course of Wednesday, Wiley said, but could take longer for some users of Google search in languages other than English.

Completion of U.S., European Review Clears Way for Agreement to Move Forward

SUNNYVALE, Calif. & REDMOND, Wash., Feb 18, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Microsoft (Nasdaq:MSFT) and Yahoo! (Nasdaq:YHOO) announced today that they have received clearance for their search agreement, without restrictions, from both the U.S. Department of Justice and the European Commission, and will now turn their attention to beginning the process of implementing the deal.

Implementation of the deal is expected to begin in the coming days and will involve transitioning Yahoo!'s algorithmic and paid search platforms to Microsoft, with Yahoo! becoming the exclusive relationship sales force for both companies' premium search advertisers globally. Once the transition is completed, the companies' unified search marketplace will deliver improved innovation for consumers, better volume and efficiency for advertisers and better monetization opportunities for web publishers through a platform that contains a larger pool of search queries.

"This breakthrough search alliance means Yahoo! can focus even more on our own innovative search experience," said Yahoo! Chief Executive Officer Carol Bartz. "Yahoo! gets to do what we do best: combine our science and technology with compelling content to build personally relevant online experiences for our users and customers."

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer concurred with Bartz's assessment. "Although we are just at the beginning of this process, we have reached an exciting milestone," Ballmer said. "I believe that together, Microsoft and Yahoo! will promote more choice, better value and greater innovation to our customers as well as to advertisers and publishers."

Consumer Search Experience

Under terms of the agreement, which was announced in late July 2009, Microsoft will provide Yahoo! with the same search result listings available through Bing, and Yahoo! will innovate around those listings by integrating rich Yahoo! content, enhanced listings with conveniently organized information about key topics, and tools to tailor the experience for Yahoo! users.

Yahoo! will focus on providing a compelling and innovative search experience that allows people to find and explore the things, people and sites that matter most to them. While Microsoft will provide the underlying platform, both companies will continue to create different, compelling and evolving experiences, competing for audience, engagement and clicks.

Transition Timeline

Yahoo! and Microsoft will work with advertisers, publishers and developers on a customized plan designed to make the transition as efficient and seamless as possible. Both companies will begin working closely with most partners well in advance of their planned transition to the Microsoft platform and will communicate important information to partners about the transition periodically via phone, email, webinars and a newly created website at www.searchalliance.com

The companies will begin the transition of algorithmic search and have set a goal of completing that effort in at least the United States by the end of 2010. Customer Relationships

Regulatory Summary

Although the transaction previously was cleared by regulators in Australia, Brazil and Canada, the terms of the agreement required clearance by U.S. and European regulators before it could commence. Meanwhile, Microsoft and Yahoo! continue to work with regulators in Korea, Taiwan, and Japan to ensure that they have all relevant information necessary to evaluate the transaction before the deal commences in those specific jurisdictions.

The release of Windows 7 last October brought Microsoft a hefty net income for the company's fiscal Q2, on which Redmond recently released figures. Revenue in the Windows division leaped up 70 percent. However, certain other divisions remained flat or down, and while Microsoft called consumer demand "healthy," it noted that enterprise demand continues to lag.

PC users purchased record numbers of Windows licenses in the last three months of 2009, driving big gains for Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) over the company's second fiscal quarter, the first quarter in which the company's Windows 7 OS was on retail shelves.

For its quarter ended Dec. 31, Microsoft reported net income of US$6.66 billion, or 74 cents per share, from $4.17 billion, or 47 cents a share, a year ago. Revenue rose to $19.02 billion from $16.63 billion the same quarter a year ago.

Microsoft's performance for the quarter beat Wall Street estimates by 15 cents. Analysts had been expecting Microsoft to register $17.4 billion in revenue.

Microsoft's non-Windows divisions reported stagnant or otherwise disappointing performance: Sales of Office software were flat, for example, and revenue for online services declined 5 percent to $581 million from the same period the year before.

However, its Windows division saw revenue jump an eye-popping 70 percent to $6.9 billion -- results that included $1.71 billion in deferred revenue from pre-sales of Windows 7 that occurred before the operating system was released. The company sold 60 million Windows licenses in the second quarter, making it the fastest-selling operating system in history, Microsoft said.
Ups and Downs

After Microsoft first reported its earnings, its shared moved higher toward $30 per share, according to Fred Ruffy, senior trading analyst with WhatsTrading.com. Since then, however, the stock slid below $29 -- the second biggest loser in the Dow behind Boeing (NYSE: BA), he told the E-Commerce Times.

"While second quarter result easily beat Street estimates, some investors might have been disappointed by the lack of positive forward-looking statements," he said. "Instead, Microsoft's CFO Peter Klein said in a post-earnings conference call that there has been no return in enterprise spending growth to date. In addition, third-quarter and 2010 Windows division growth will be in line with overall PC growth. Further, he expects business refresh cycle to begin in 2010 and gradually increase."

Some investors might have expected more upbeat comments, especially as it relates to business IT spending, Ruffy concluded.

Indeed, Klein took pains to point out the differences between consumer and enterprise spending in his comments during the conference call. "While consumer demand remains healthy, we have not seen a return of enterprise spending growth," he told analysts on an earnings conference call Thursday.

"The satisfaction rate with Windows 7 has been very high -- both in the September-October time frame and the latest research data from December-January," said Laura DiDio, principle with ITIC, referring to survey data her firm has collected.

"Clearly there was a lot of pent-up demand -- people can't stay on XP forever, because the applications keep progressing beyond the point that XP can support."

Survey data suggests that Windows 7 will continue to uplift Microsoft earnings at least for one more quarter.

In the ITIC survey, 60 percent of respondents said they would deploy Windows 7 within the first year of its release. Within the first six months of its release, 30 percent said they would migrate to the new OS. "We are in that window right now, with another wave expected," she said.

Microsoft worked hard to deliver a product that would be well-received by the public, she continued -- especially after Vista's disastrous rollout. "You can never have all the kinks worked out of a product, but they got the big ones nailed."

Large Hadron Collider Visible in Google Earth

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a particle accelerator and collider located at CERN, near Geneva, Switzerland, and is scheduled to be open in May of 2008. Large particle accelerators are built in circles to get particles up to very high speeds (near the speed of light). The LHC is nearly 27 km in circumference and is located 50 to 175 meters underground on the border between France and Switzerland. CERN is the European Organization for Nuclear Research. This massive underground structure is difficult to visualize since it is all underground.

Google Earth 3D modeling guru Joey Wade has posted a 3D diagram and models showing the LHC and floated it directly above its actual location so you can see how it looks in Google Earth. Download the LHC model . He has roughly modeled the 3D buildings on the surface so you can get a feel for the underlying structures and how deep they are underground. Zoom in to see the buildings and tilt your view. Joey has included a folder with YouTube videos in placemarks which provide some excellent information about the project. The large deep structure is the new ATLAS particle detector system. Nice work!

Of course you have. You’ve also heard it repeated over and over that the Large Hadron Collider is the biggest, most expensive scientific instrument in history and that it’s going to change our fundamental understanding of the universe.

Well, great, but what does that mean?

We break down how five major physics theories — and the theorists who’ve spent their lives developing them — may be impacted by the discoveries that could emanate from the LHC. We also provide answers to all your LHC FAQ in 140 characters or less, so you can send them to your friends on Twitter.

Basically, the collider is a series of tubes intended to guide protons as superconducting magnets propel them close to the speed of light. You can think of the LHC as the Disneyland of physics experiments. A host of different detectors have been designed to test which theoretical physicists’ math fits the real world.

Over the last few decades, physics has followed a path of increasing strangeness.
Theory after theory about the fundamental nature of the universe has arisen: string theory, universes composed of multiple universes and many dimensions, and matter we can’t see and can hardly detect. Now, that generation of theoreticians will have their ideas put to the test deep underground on the border of France and Switzerland.

Here’s how the LHC could bolster or banish five of those theories:

The Big Bang Theory

Best Case: The Large Hadron Colliders’ ALICE experiment successfully creates quark-gluon plasma, a substance theorized to have existed just milliseconds after the Big Bang. By generating temperatures more than 100,000 times hotter than the sun, scientists hope to watch as this particle goo cools and expands into the particles that we know. That could help scientists answer why protons and neutrons weigh 100 times more than the quarks they’re made of.

Worst Case: Scientists inadvertently make a micro black hole, and the earth is quickly erased from existence. Just kidding: scientists at CERN and elsewhere have ruled out the possibility that the LHC will create any kind of doomsday scenario. The black holes that the LHC could theoretically create don’t even have enough energy to light up a light bulb. On the other hand, the U.K.’s Astronomer Royal put the odds of destroying the world at 1 in 50 million (which puts it in the realm of possibilities but still not as likely as hitting the lottery).

String Theory

Best Case: Scientists detect certain types of supersymmetric particles, aka sparticles, which physicist Michio Kaku calls, "signals from the
11th dimension." This would show that string theorists have been on the right path and that the universe really is made up of the four dimensions we experience and then seven others that unite the forces of nature.

Worst Case: String theory’s basic assumptions are violated. The LHC will be the first particle accelerator capable of allowing scientists to study W bosons, the elementary particle responsible for the weak force.
If they don’t scatter in certain ways, it’ll be back to the drawing board for a generation of string theorists, or as one physicist told New Scientist,
"If we see these violations, people will start working very feverishly on some sort of alternative that will produce these violations."

The "Our Universe Is Not Alone" Theory

Best Case: If scientists find a long-lived gluino, the postulated supersymmetric partner of the gluon, one group of scientists argues that it can be seen as a "messenger from the multiverse" and will lend support to the theory that our universe is just one of many. (Keep in mind though: not everyone is buying this interpretation.)

Worst Case: Our universe really is alone. Or even worse: it’s lonely.

The Dark Matter of the Universe Theory

Best Case: Astrophysicists currently believe that 96 percent of the universe is made up of dark matter and energy that we can’t see and can barely detect. Dark matter alone is estimated to compose 26 percent of the universe, only we have no idea what it’s made of. It has been postulated that the neutralino is the best candidate for dark matter. Many physicists hope that the neutralino — which, if it exists, will be relatively easy to produce — will make an appearance in the debris inside the CMS or Atlas detectors, confirming the theory of dark matter.

Worst Case: Proudly, physicists announce that they’ve observed dark matter’s unmistakable signature inside one of the LHC’s detectors.
But over the next few weeks, the reality sinks in that they’ve actually made a measurement mistake. Some physicists don’t think that the LHC
will be precise enough to measure any dark matter that it’s lucky enough to create.

The awe-inspiring fruition of the last edition has inspired us to be back with more ardor. The hankering for anabasis has been so high that you can except something off the beaten path from our team...For every event there is a starting point and undoubtedly its the design of its logo which gives recognition to the entire event.The story is no different here and we started our labor with the design of the logo for Sakshama09....

A Nostalgic trip down lane - SAKSHAMA'08

The School of Mechanical Engineering, Sastra University conducted its first ever National Symposium- “Sakshma-08”, thus providing a chance for the best minds of the country to show off their superiority in mastering this era of Machines and Technology.

The whole idea behind such a mega event came forth when the powerful ones of the “Mechanical and Mechatronics Association- MECCASO” decided to add something more to their list of achievements, a feather in their cap and hence “Sakshama-08” was born.

But what is Sakshama?? What has that name got to do anything with a mechanical symposium?? Well when the time for naming this brain child came up, a huge turmoil took over. Needed a name! A name that not only talks about the technicality of the symposium but also sticks to the traditional roots of Sastra University, and then came up the idea of naming the event in the “language of Gods-Sanskrit”. After literally an era of careful research, “Sakshama” was chosen which means, to realise one’s potential.

Ideas for the events were left open to students of the SoME and the response to that was revolutionary! Finally the committee of organisers scrutinized and shortlisted five events which covered the various aspects of the mechanical and mechtronics sector.

The events were a combination of technology and entertainment, of careful research and conceptual analysis, of money and power!

The base for any symposium played a foundation here too!
Paper Presentation: Innovation is what sending shock waves through corridors of power and it’s the thing that drives much of today’s conglomerate. With the three main subdivisions of the mechanical world as the topics- thermal engineering, design and production, Sakshama served as a platform for various innovative ideas to be showcased.

Watch the Birdie: Well men and the game golf go a long way back but golf and machines?? Well at Sakshama, the idea of golf for machines came up. Participants were required to construct a mechanism to drive a ball into strategically positioned holes, with varying levels of difficulty.

On the spot events were decided to inculcate fun and frolic in the symposium. The events under this were Treasure Hunt and Inti Sensors.
Treasure hunt: as the name suggests, this was to bring out the ‘Jack Sparrows’ within one’s self by providing clues to hunt for the treasure hidden in the deep and dark corners of the Viswakarma Joth. Participants were required to use the combined might of brain and brawn to find the product of quest and thus to emerge victorious.
Inti Sensors: Measurement has become an integral part of the engineers and the event Inti Sensors was based on measurement of different quantities. A Mechatronics problem statement was given and the participants were to solve the problem impromptu.

Finally, none of the tech fests or the symposiums becomes true without this event- “Tech Quiz”. The team came up with rounds of questions to quench the thirst of knowledge for the participants.

The preparations for the symposium started in full swing about a month earlier. First things first, Sponsorship! With just the idea for a technical platform and the green signal from the authorities, nothing could be officially started, unless and until someone came forward in financing the events. Fortunately, ZOHO, A Product of Advent and TATA Consultancy Services, were indeed a blessing in the implementation of this creativity.

The rules and the problem statements for the events being set, the Design team of the department got together to start off their long process of preparing the brochures, posters, pamphlets, certificates and what not!

With the job of the marketing team and the design team nearly complete, the posters and the invitations were sent to some of the leading engineering colleges of the nation and the response to the preliminary rounds of Paper Presentation indeed made the team happy! A jury was set up to select the papers for the finals presentation on the Sakshama platform. It consisted of eminent professors from the host department.

All this while the infra team was busy in preparing the tracks and thus spreading the feeling of enthusiasm all over, the design team came up with the idea of Sakshama T-shirts for better publicity within the University Campus. The excellent design and the T-Shirt quality accelerated its sales and even before the Day arrived, the college was swarming with the people in the t-shirts.

Finally the D-Day dawned bright and sunny. The day started off with the inaugural function with Mr. R.Venkatraman, Director S.P.F as the chief guest. After the ceremony, the day proceeded on with the various being held as scheduled. An overwhelming response from more than 18 colleges spread throughout Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states with over 250 participants from different branches of engineering.
Apart from the outside colleges, the interest shown by both department and non department students of Sastra University was indeed like icing on the cake. The event witnessed a marathon paper presentation program with more than 17 papers being exhibited in fields of Thermal, Design and Manufacturing Engineering. The most sought after Treasure Hunt had whopping 85 teams, while Watch the Birdie event drew more than 10 different mechanisms all of which were to play the robot golf. Inti sensors, event to test innovation, pulled in a large crowd along with a Surprise event on creativity in drafting saw huge participation. The Quiz Finale was the trademark of the entire event, with 5 final teams battling it out to glory. The valedictory ceremony marked the culmination of a month long efforts by the team. Mr. V.Badrinath, Dean H.R. Department, Sastra University, presided over the ceremony and gave away the prizes to the victorious.

Picasa 3.5 brings facial recognition to the desktop

Roughly a year after rolling out facial recognition on its Picasa Web Albums site, Google on Tuesday is introducing an updated version of its Picasa software (for Windows | Mac) that can recognize faces in photos stored on users' computers.

Just as it does on the Web, Picasa scans your photos for faces, then groups together photos of specific people. It's then your job to tell it who they are as well as confirm its guesses. If someone you're tagging is in your Google address book, you can also look them up very quickly with auto-complete. Otherwise, Google gives you the option to add them as someone new; this information then gets synced back up your Google address book.

Picasa's software can now scan for faces, and offer up recommendations of people it thinks are your contacts.

The system worked very well for me, but it was slow going. I had to leave the program running overnight for it to finish processing my 3,700 or so photos for faces. It also had my processor humming, since it was doing all the work on my machine instead of Google's giant server farm.

That's not to say Google hasn't included a few things to help speed up the process. For one, if you've got photos that are both hosted online and on your hard drive--and that have already been scanned for faces, the Picasa software can grab that information and add it to your local library. This saves it from having to scan the same photos twice.

And for photos it thinks contain people you've verified as contacts, it gives you quick "yes" and "no" buttons that can add or reject name tags. Oftentimes, clicking "yes" adds a few more suggestions for photos of that person that the program feels is safe enough to recommend. There's also a way to group accept or group decline its suggestions, which saves time you would have otherwise spent clicking the buttons one at a time.

Users can now geotag their photos right in the Picasa, just like they can in Picasa Web Albums.

As with Picasa Web Albums, your reward for trudging through your photos to add tags is better organization, which for a massive library of old, archived shots can be hugely helpful. And unlike Picasa's albums feature, name tags let you quickly sort all of your photos by who's in them--not when they were taken or how you've personally organized them. It also continues to do this with any photos you add to your library in the future.

Along with facial recognition, the new version of the software integrates Google Maps--a much-wanted feature among geotagging fans. Just as you're able to do in Picasa Web Albums, you can search for a location in Google Maps, then amend that geographic data to your photo. You can also view groups of photos by place by clicking on little red map markers that show where individual photos have been placed. Unlike the facial recognition feature though, this is still largely a manual process of doing a search for each location then adding it to a photo, or group of photos, at once. That is, unless you have a camera with GPS (which most people don't).

One big thing Google is bringing to the table with this release over something like Apple's iPhoto (at least for Mac users) is the capability to tag items that are spread out across your entire computer, as well as external drives. In that regard, it does a much better job than iPhoto when it comes to automatically importing and organizing photos--all without disturbing where they're stored. Considering it now does much of what iPhoto is able to do with faces, with the added bonus of grabbing that contact information from your Google address book, it makes for a very seamless experience.

The new version of the software should appear as an update for users of Picasa v3.1 the next time they start the program. It can also be forced to update by clicking the "check for updates online" option in the help menu.

Velocity of Money...!!!

It is August. In a small town on the South Coast of France, the holiday season is in full swing, but it is raining so there is not too much business happening. Everyone is heavily in debt. Luckily, a rich Russian tourist arrives in the foyer of the small local hotel. He asks for a room and puts a Euro 100 note on the reception counter, takes a key and goes to inspect the room located up the stairs on the third floor. The hotel owner takes the banknote in hurry and rushes to his meat supplier to whom he owes E100. The butcher takes the money and races to his supplier to pay his debt. The wholesaler rushes to the farmer to pay E100 for pigs he purchased some time ago. The farmer triumphantly gives the E100 note to a local hair dresser who provided him his services on credit. The Hair dresser goes quickly to the Hotel, as he owed the hotel for his room use a month back.
At that moment, the rich Russian is coming down to reception and informs the hotel owner that the proposed room is unsatisfactory and takes his E100 back and departs. There was no profit or income. There was NO real economic activity. But everyone no longer has any debt and the small town people look optimistically towards their future. That's the power of velocity of money!

Chrome is actually based on the open source project called chromium. Its available for free on google code : http://code.google.com/chromium/
Chromium is available for Linux and mac also, it is called CrossOver Chromium. It is emulated to run on both platforms, but does not support it natively.

TRUE INCIDENT

An Indian man walks into a bank in
New York City and asks for the loan officer.
He tells the loan officer that he is going to India on business
for two weeks and needs to borrow $5,000.

The bank officer tells him that the bank
will need some form of security for the loan,
so the Indian man hands over the keys
and documents of new Ferrari parked
on the street in front of the bank.
He produces the title and everything checks out.
The loan officer agrees to accept
the car as collateral for the loan.

The bank's president and its officers
all enjoy a good laugh at the Indian
for using a $250,000 Ferrari
as collateral against a $5,000 loan.
An employee of the bank then
drives the Ferrari into the bank's
underground garage and parks it there.

Two weeks later, the Indian returns,
repays the $5,000 and the interest,
which comes to $15.41.
The loan officer says,
"Sir, we are very happy to have had your business,
and this transaction has worked out very nicely,
but we are a little puzzled.
While you were away,
we checked you out and found that you are a multi millionaire.
What puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow "$5,000" ?

The Indian replies:

just before pongal comes the usual news at sastra ....... only one day declared as holiday and no open permission for students visiting their homes.. was a bit dejected on hearing the news.
when my friends kamal n gokul came to know about this , they were like machi why not celebrate pongal here???and tried to change my mood. it was another two days for pongal n we sat there breaking our heads wondering what to do.. we wanted something different to be done. then this idea of kite flying suddenly struck us n then we were like why not include rangoli also specially for girls.
we had only 48 hours to plan n organise the complete thing. so we approached our senior manoj anna, one who can help us out anytime n in any situation.
so we planned n set up our tasks and divided our works amongst us. called upon a few first years n second years to do some volunteering work. major task to get permission from the management. designed this poster n went to get the permission.

just kept our fingers crossed n finally we got the permission for the same. we were on cloud nine, jumping with joy. now started the main task. had to set up the arena , plan everything for the next day like framing the rules n regulations ,inviting jury etc. the materials etc. had to be brought from tanjore. first aid was also to be taken care of. registrations were on n all of us had hectic schedules of classes to be managed along with this work. we kept our fingers crossed hoping that atleast some 200 people turn up for the evnt.
finally the D day arrived n at first there was a small crowd. few kites went up n then a huge rush.
my god i could not believe the situation. total of some 200 kites were sold out within half an hour. n loads of girls tuned up for the rangoli in the traditional sarees.
around 120 teams for kite flying including both girls n boys and around 35 teams for rangoli turned up. so around 1000 people made it to the event. the event was a mega hit.
few snaps ....

in the due course learnt a lot about team work, helping each other out , time management , how to approach different kind of people , what hard work meant n best part enjoyed like hell.
we made a profit after spending a good amount on prizes n also rewarding the volunteers.
so my first salary lol.. got mom n dad gifts from it also to my best friend :-)

Tomato Story

A Jobless man applied for the position of 'office boy' at Microsoft.
The HR manager interviewed him then watched him cleaning the floor as a test.

'You are employed' he said. Give me your e-mail address and I'll send you the application to fill in, as well as date when you may start.

The man replied 'But I don't have a computer, neither an email' .

'I'm sorry' , said the HR manager. If you don't have an email, that means you do not exist. And who doesn't exist, cannot have the job.'

The man left with no hope at all. He didn't know what to do, with only $10 in his pocket. He then decided to go to the supermarket and buy a 10Kg tomato crate.
He then sold the tomatoes in a door to door round.. In less than two hours,
he succeeded to double his capital. He repeated the operation three times,
and returned home with $60.

The man realized that he can survive by this way, and started to go everyday earlier, and return late. Thus, his money doubled or tripled everyday.

Shortly, he bought a cart, then a truck, and then he had his own fleet of delivery vehicles.

5 years later, the man is one of the biggest food retailers in the US
He started to plan his family's future, and decided to have a life insurance.

He called an insurance broker, and chose a protection plan.
When the conversation was concluded the broker asked him his email.
The man replied, 'I don't have an email.'
The broker answered curiously, 'You don't have an email, and yet have succeeded to build an empire. Can you imagine what you could have been if you had an e mail?!!'The man thought for a while and replied,'Yes, I'd be an office boy at Microsoft!'

Make your opinion known
Link like crazy
Write less
250 Words is enough
Make Headlines snappy
Write with passion
Include Bullet point lists
Edit your post
Make your posts easy to scan
Be consistent with your style
Litter the post with keywords

1. Make your opinion known
People like blogs, they like blogs because they are written by people and not corporations. People want to know what people think, crazy as it sounds they want to know what you think. Tell them exactly what you think using the least amount of words possible.

2. Link like crazy.
Support your post with links to other web pages that are contextual to your post.

3. Write Less
Give the maximum amount of information with the least amount of words. Time is finite and people are infinitely busy. Blast your knowledge into the reader at the speed of sound.

4. 250 is enough
A long post is easier to forget and harder to get into. A short post is the opposite.

5. Make Headlines snappy
Contain your whole argument in your headline. Check out National newspapers to see how they do it.

6. Include bullet point lists
We all love lists, it structures the info in an easily digestible format.

7. Make your posts easy to scan
Every few paragraphs insert a sub heading. Make sentences and headlines short and to the point.

8. Be consistent with your style
People like to know what to expect, once you have settled on a style for your audience stick to it.

9. Litter the post with Keywords.

Any of the following is considered plagiarism.

* turning in someone else’s work as your own
* copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit
* giving incorrect information about the source
* changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit
* copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of your work, whether you give credit or not

In other words, plagiarism is an act of fraud. It involves both stealing someone else’s work and lying about it afterward (either by refusing or by not giving due credit).

Now, are you wondering why am I talking about this ?

Well, like you I am also a blogger and have two blogs. I happened to be a victim of plagiarism many times. Several of my creations have been lifted by others without my knowledge.

When I spoke about it to Nirav Sanghavi, the founder of BlogAdda.com, he requested me to write on the topic and I thank him for giving me this opportunity.

Here I will explain you the legal aspects, implications and my experiences and how to deal with it.

The expression of original ideas is considered intellectual property, and is protected by copyright laws, just like original inventions. Almost all forms of expression fall under copyright protection as long as they are recorded in some way such as a book, a computer file, a painting or even a blog.

At one time, a work was protected by copyright only if it included a copyright trademark (the © symbol). However, now as per the laws, our works are by default copyright protected with or without the inclusion of this symbol.

Anyone who reproduces copyrighted material improperly can be termed as violator of the Copyright Act and can be prosecuted in a court of law. It doesn’t matter if you intend to plagiarize or not, ignorance is never an excuse.

In the eyes of the law any form of plagiarism is an offense that demands punitive action.

Most cases of plagiarism are considered misdemeanors and are punishable by fines of $100 to $50,000 and up to one year jail-term.

But in a case where a plagiarist copies and earns more than $2,500 from copyrighted material, plagiarism is considered a serious crime. He or she may face up to 100 times ($250,000) in fines and up to ten years in jail.

However, in India the laws are not so well defined. Generally it is acted upon in haphazard manner after somebody complains or the media cries over the issue. Sometimes if it takes a shape of copyright infringement, it takes a serious turn.

What do I do when someone steals my material ?

I take a softer approach in the beginning. I start with leaving a comment on the plagiarist’s blog mentioning his/her mistake and the consequences. In most cases, it suffices since the plagiarist is ignorant about it.

In some cases, the plagiarist tries to be extra smart and keeps deleting your & your readers’ comments. A little humiliation in front of his/her readers is the key then.

If possible, write a post on your blog citing the case and invite his readers there.

There was only one case who did not accept that he did any wrong, rather accused me of stealing his material !! But I had enough evidences to prove my point and had to ultimately report to his blogging platform that definitely did not approve such misdeeds. His readers also confronted him and he had to publicly apologize on my blog. By that time it was too late and his entire blog was deleted and he was banned from further blogging.

I am glad that till date I did not have to resort to the ultimate step of knocking the doors of court but I’ll not hesitate if the need arises.

How to prevent plagiarism

1. Display copyright policy or badge on your blog
2. Watermark all your photos
3. Enable word verification to avoid spam
4. And keep your eyes open

How can you copy if you have to copy ?

1. Put within quotation mark everything that comes directly from the text
2. Paraphrase but be sure you are not just rearranging or replacing a few words. Changing only the words of an original source is NOT sufficient to prevent plagiarism. You must cite a source whenever you borrow ideas as well as words
3. Give credit to source, but sometimes giving credit is not enough and they expect you to ask for their permission. Check for any such copyright policy.

MASS reunion n sleep over.....

'MASS' is our gang's name and it stands for Madan, Adithya, Siddharth (sid) n Shreyas. We were all together in our 11 n 12, n close friends from then on.. all of us in different colleges now, but still we make time to meet each other during holidays. The more we plan the worse it gets at times.. were planning to have dinner in a hotel called dynasty for the past 1.5 years n finally made it this time. .. din plan much ,even sleepover idea came up all of a sudden. lol....

we all met at shreyas' house, the usual hang out place for our gang.. i kinda went a bit early coz I had to chat with shreyas , it was long since we had a big chat... then madan n sid joined us. took two bikes ( scooty pep lolz..) n went to the hotel. awesome ride.. awesome dinner.. awesome bill.. lol:-)

took a few pics finally. all 4 of us together.

then the ride back home was awesome..went to madan's old house n few memories came down flooding before us.. then escapade scenario from the police ..:-)

the sleepover was really awesome with midnight snacks, jokes, stories ,movie, laughter etc...

The Law of the Garbage Truck

One day, I hopped into a taxi and took off for the airport . We were driving in the right lane when suddenly, a black car, jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed the brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches!

The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. I mean, was really friendly.

So I asked, "Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!" This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck'

He explained, "Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you. NEVER take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on with the routine life." Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home or on the streets.

The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day. Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so...... 'Love the people who treat you right.. Pray for the ones who don't.'

Other suggestions

A group of children were playing near two railway tracks, one still in use while the other disused. Only one child played on the disused track, the rest on the operational track.

The train is coming, and you are just beside the track interchange. You can make the train change its course to the disused track and save most of the kids. However, that would also mean the lone child playing by the disused track would be sacrificed. Or would you rather let the train go its way?

Most people might choose to divert the course of the train, and sacrifice only one child. You might think the same way, I guess. Exactly, to save most of the children at the expense of only one child was rational decision most people would make, morally and emotionally. But, have you ever thought that the child choosing to play on the disused track had in fact made the right decision to play at a safe place?

Nevertheless, he had to be sacrificed because of his ignorant friends who chose to play where the danger was. This kind of dilemma happens around us everyday. In the office, community, in politics and especially in a democratic society, the minority is often sacrificed for the interest of the majority, no matter how foolish or ignorant the majority are, and how farsighted and knowledgeable the minority are. The child who chose not to play with the rest on the operational track was sidelined. And in the case he was sacrificed, no one would shed a tear for him.

The great critic Leo Velski Julian as well as Sourav who told the story said he would not try to change the course of the train because he believed that the kids playing on the operational track should have known very well that track was still in use, and that they should have run away if they heard the train's sirens.. If the train was diverted, that lone child would definitely die because he never thought the train could come over to that track! Moreover, that track was not in use probably because it was not safe. If the train was diverted to the track, we could put the lives of all passengers on board at stake! And in your attempt to save a few kids by sacrificing one child, you might end up sacrificing hundreds of people to save these few kids.

While we are all aware that life is full of tough decisions that need to be made, we may not realize that hasty decisions may not always be the right one.

'Remember that what's right isn't always popular... and what's popular isn't always right.'

The way blogger allows the visitors to comment on our posts is completely annoying and this makes many visitors reluctant to comment but say no more for that..This new version of commenting system is created by intensedebate.comthis comment box can be use as a widget, and to apply this widget is very simple, and to remove this is more simple it just like when you remove Page Element from your blog. Ok, if you interest to try this widget I’ll show you how to put it.

Google Phone Hit by "Reboot" Bug

A bug has been discovered on the G1 mobile phone, which runs Google's Android software. The bug means that anything typed into the phone shortly after it is turned on is interpreted by the software as a command.

The bug was discovered during a text conversation between two phone users. One of the participants typed the word "reboot" into the text message, and the phone shut down and rebooted. Google has developed a fix for the bug.

The bug was reported on the Google problem shooting forum, with user jdhorvat stating: "I had just rebooted my phone and the first thing I typed was a response to her text which simply stated "Reboot" - which, to my surprise, rebooted my phone."

yesterday was the best surprise which i ever got in my life. My parents presented me with a DELL inspiron 1525 laptop. they gave it to me around 11 pm yesterday n like i din even have clue about it. it was the best surprise, my god still cant believe it. it was like configured long ago n they were like u will get it by Christmas but when i got it yesterday, my god what a surprise it was.. so will be taking it to coll after my study hols. really thank my uncle, aunt n parents for the surprise.

Once there was loving couple traveling in a bus in a mountainous area. They
decided to get down at some place. After the couple got down at some place
the bus moved on. As the bus moved on, a huge rock fell on the bus from the
mountain and crushed the bus to crumbs. Everybody on board was killed. The
couple upon seeing that, said, "We wish we were on that bus" Why do u think
they said that?

If they had remained on the bus instead of deciding to get down, the
resulting time delay could have been avoided and the rock would have fallen

finally time to leave home for my practical exams..enjoyed a lot these days... got so much to eat..lol
could not blog much as i had been busy with my work plus cousins, shopping etc etc..
leaving tonight by bus along with ma friends n tomorrow is the last day of my 3 sem at coll. sob sob sob. it was a wonderful sem n enjoyed a lot. we had classes maximum till 2 each day plus loads of free hours. subjects also were decent enough none of them being too tough. cant forget the mass bunks, chats, jokes,pranks etc etc.. hmmm what an awesome sem it was.tomorrow will be the last day, cant believe it!!!!!

saw the movie today n a brief review about it.
Wonder what went wrong? For, boy wonder, Chetan Bhagat's pulp fiction page- turners literally read like a Bollywood masala flick. Reading his recent Three Mistakes ... was almost like watching a Hindi film, complete with a fire and brimstone climax that belted out all the right messages about bhaichara (fraternity), ekta (unity), dosti (friendship) and humanism.One Night at a Call Centre too has the mandatory ingredients, including a brush with divinity. And the devil too! Not forgetting the break-ups, link-ups and patriotic pulp that generally assures foolproof drama.Not this time, however. The problem lies not so much in the performances as in the turgid screenplay and the tedious plot development which transform the film into an uninspired celluloid adaptation of a successful book..

	1) Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft would be launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, SHAR, Sriharikota by PSLV-XL (PSLV-C11) in an highly elliptical initial orbit (IO) with perigee (nearest point to the Earth) of about 257 km and an apogee (farthest point from the Earth) of about 22,858 km.

	2) After a few revolutions in the initial orbit, the spacecraft's Liquid Apogee Motor (LAM) firing would be done, when the spacecraft is near perigee, to raise the apogees to 37,421 km and 73,925 km respectively.

	3) Subsequently, the LAM is fired to take the Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft to extremely high elliptical orbit with apogees 199,277 km and 269,201 km. Later the spacecraft would be raised to an orbit with 1,019 km perigee and 386,194 km apogee.

	Once the Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft reaches the vicinity of the Moon, the spacecraft is slowed down sufficiently so as to enable the gravity of the moon capture it into an elliptical orbit (LC). After a careful and detailed observation the height of the spacecraft's orbit will be finally lowered to its intended 100 km circular polar orbit. Following this, the Moon Impact Probe (MIP) would be ejected from Chandrayaan-1 to impact on the lunar surface. Afterwards, all the scientific instruments/payloads are commissioned sequentially and Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft explores the Moon with its array of instruments for two years.

today turned out to be a excellent day. got to see loads of movies n eat variety of stuffs.
also tried out my new sony digital camera.its simply awesome with great clarity.
also copied few stuff into ma new 250 gb portable hard disk. cousins were supposed to come today but could not make it. they all turning up tomorrow, so sure to have a blast.
n this time its gonna be a smoke n cracker free diwali at house, concept by my sis..she does not want to pollute the environment plus is against child labour etc etc.. at this young age she came with an awesome idea n me never even thought so.lol.anyways wish u all an advance happy n safe diwali.

finally reached home for diwali.. got 4 days of holidays plus me bunking 2 more days, makes it 6 days. had mom special breakfast today. have got my practical exams scheduled as soon as i get back. sob sob sob.. yesterday there was a lecture series session on rural development in MECASSO. some professor from IIT delhi had come for the same. keep looking for more posts as i am at home plus its diwali.

Mohali, Oct 18 Sachin Tendulkar, playing in his 50th Test innings against Australia, Friday became the leading run-getter - 12,027 - in the history of Test cricket, bettering West Indian Brian Lara's aggregate of 11,953 in 131 Tests.

Sachin, when on 61, became the first batsman in Test annals to amass 12,000 runs in the longer version of the game. At the time of achieving the feat, his average was 54.29.

best part was we were able to watch the match as it was screened in the college wi fi n it was really great.the whole hostel n campus was in claps when sachin reached the record. hats off to him.

had loads of fun..back here life is normal only thing is exams are approaching n its like full syllabus exam.gotta work hard :-) best part is that weather is really awesome n its been raining here.

the event was a major success with around 200 people participating in various events.
it went on smooth n by the end of the day, turned out to be a grand success.dean was in full praise n said he was expecting an even bigger sakshama '09. best part the organizers got an standing ovation.

on 2 October Mr.kalam visited our college as part of the University's 25 years celebrations n also Gandhi jayanthi celebrations.
a very large pandal was erected n around 3000 students n 1000 staff were present for his lecture.
he spread his message of vision 20-20. also talked about various topics related to science n how students can help in research. he wanted the colleges n students to focus more on research along with the academics. his speech was really inspiring.
his ending words of the speech,which i still remember

Courage to think different,

Courage to discover the impossible,
Courage to travel into an unexplored path,
Courage to share the knowledge
Courage to remove the pain

was really busy with sakshama n also duo to poor wi-fi, blogging about this now.
with sakshama 08 approaching, everyone was busy in the department. many things were being planned n loads of work done.meetings were scheduled n many teams were formed with work being assigned for the different teams. permissions asked for putting up various things. banners,certificates, id cards ,maps,schedule ,score sheets n other things were for events were designed n printed.and finally the final day approached.few pics too.

finally catching up with blogging after a really hectic schedule..so will try the best to put in everything..
after my exams, my department's technical fest was nearing n so had loads of work to do.in the meanwhile nit trichy's cultural fest called festember was scheduled n we all planned to got there. it was a three day event full of fun.on 19 the pro nite was scheduled with drums sivamani n karthik being the ones to perform on the stage.it was a really good performance n we enjoyed it like hell,though the organising sucked to the core.caught up with ma friends at nit t n went around n saw everything.it was really huge.. spent good time with my friends n was back to my coll at 2 am.
as usual SASTRA, my coll , won the festember for 10 time in a row.
n also the best was salsa dance..he he..lol..

GOOGLE's G1

Google has introduced a new phone called the G1. It is set to rival Apple's iPhone. It runs the Android operating system fully coded by google experts. It is made by HTC mobiles of Japan and sold in the US by T-mobile for $179. Besides the touchpad, it also has an integrated keyboard. It supports all of google's online applications with excellent flexibility. (you need a google account to use this phone!). But it is a bit costly for its price. It is 30% heavier and thicker than the iPhone, it has just 1gb of mem card, all that for $179, but an iPhone with 8gb internal mem is $199.

Higgs boson or the god particle.

A few things that i would like to share with u people..this is the latest activity at CERN..they are trying to find about this particle..
The God Particle is said to have given mass to all that exists today. This particle existed about 10 to 11 seconds after the formation of the universe, constituting a field called the Higgs Field. The amount of time a particle reacted with it, the more massive it got. The idea of such a particle was suggested by Peter Higgs, a British physicist. This elusive particle is what is going to unravel the mysteries of the properties of matter. CERN's LHC will be ripping apart protons, recreating the initial conditions of the universe, in search of the elusive GOD PARTICLE.

its been a very hectic schedule n so could not blog much. it was exams!!! so had dig through my stuff n find the books n had to go through them.. it was like studyin greek n latin but somehow managed to finished them..then our paper got selected at SRM university n so had to come to chennai for the same. we had the presentation today, we could not win the event though..will be leaving to tanjore tomorrow night.
my college is bustling with activities.. the intra-mural cul fest called carpedium plus sports meet called coloseum have been scheduled this weekend.and from the info i got from my friends, it seems they are rocking.

Just now downloaded the all new GOOGLE CHROME and its simply great...the new and best feature that i found in chrome was that it automatically completes the URL you are looking for....i tried some very less popular sites and it was successful to a certain extent.it even takes very less memory compared to Fire fox,plus its open source. The looks are also great!!!!!

its been long since i blogged..its all because of sastra's power problems..because of the frequent and unscheduled power-cuts, many problems have arose, first being no wi-fi. also the lab sessions getting affected in our coll.Due to the power-cuts, even availability of water has become scarce..
with vinayaka chaturthi being a holiday we got a open permission for three days n so back to chennai..lol..
regarding the paper presentation,it went on well but sadly we could not do a podium finish..
but learned a lot,had a good experience n got to make a lot of friends..
sakshama our symposium's poster got ready n has been put up eveywhere in the coll.
grand parents are at home n today morning there was pooja.. had loads of goodies prepared by mom..yesterday had been to dhaam dhoom, good movie can watch it once..songs simply rock!!!

i am really excited that my paper on antimatter got selected. so have been called for presenting it in the next round at chennai..supposed to be on Thursday but got permission from coll n came to chennai on Tuesday itself.(that's today)..came by setc ac bus,it was really freezing...
just finished the presentation,gotta time n check it tomorrow.
having loads goodies to eat..missing ma sis as she is at madurai.. sob sob..

this post should have been there on 24.08.08 but due to bad wi-fi at sastra,i am posting it now..
ma sis got selected for the athletics regional meet of the kv's to be held at madurai from 25 to 27..
so she was on her way to madurai n the train had to pass through trichy, that place is close to ma coll. so gave her a surprise by meeting her at the station.. got her loads of goodies to eat n drink.though the train stopped only for 10 minutes we could talk loads..
she was really happy to see me..lol..
wished her luck n had an awesome dinner at sri sangeethas( the most famous hotel at richy)..
then back to coll..
one more special thing today was that my paper on antimatter had got selected..
so turned out to be a really good n exciting day..

after reading dan brown's novel angel n demons, i really got interested in this topic...also my friend Dj is also a freak abt particle physics..so we both decided to do something on the topic..
its a very interesting topic n lot of research is going on..
a brief intro abt the topic

Everything in nature has its own counterpart Light has Dark, Day has Night and
Life has Death. Similarly for equilibrium to be maintained, matter also has its exact opposite,
named antimatter. Antimatter has a negative nucleus with positrons revolving around it. The
masses of a particle and its respective anti particle are the same. The charges are equal in
magnitude but opposite in sign. When antimatter comes into contact with matter it annihilates
and their kinetic plus rest-mass energy is converted into other particles according to the
relation E = mc2. For example, when an electron and a positron annihilate at rest, two gamma
rays, each with energy 511 keV, are produced. Theoretically the amount of energy released
from annihilation of one milligram of antimatter and matter can supply power for the whole
of New York City for one week.

The universe seems to contain no significant amounts of antimatter, despite
expectations that both should have been created equally during the big bang. So where did all
the antimatter go? One possible explanation could be a subtle and unexpected difference in
the properties of matter and antimatter, leading to a slight excess of matter which survived the
initial cataclysm of matter-antimatter annihilation. Experimenters at CERN are producing
antimatter in particle accelerators to search for and study this difference. Antimatter also has
real-life medical applications, such as positron emission tomography—PET scans. But
because producing antimatter even in minuscule quantities is very difficult.

its a hilarious serial regarding 6 friends joey,ross,chandler,monica,rachel n my favourite phoebe..
its excellent n simply awesome..it has abt 10 seasons n each season has abt 20 episodes..
we are right now at the 5 season.people if u get a chance to see it don miss it...
n actually it has helped me a bit too..i started using the words they use n it has really improved my vocabulary..

due to frequent load shedding at ma college on tuesdays n thursdays the management has come out with an excellent solution.lol..they have made these two days as holidays n saturday and sunday as working days...sob sob sob..so no weekends..no frequent trips to home..sob sob..
this will continue for another three weeks n hope ends with it..so while stayin in hostel, we get boredup as there is no wi-fi,electricity n lan..and we are forced to read books (the weirdest thing!!) :P.

memorable trip to chennai n Family reunion!!!

got three days of hols n came back home after a month...had a good company in the bus..lol..
august 15 was some pooja,so all relatives came home.got loads of food stuffs to eat.some 15 varieties of specialities were prepared for me specially...next day we all went to satyam movie.(full family 19 memebers)..it was my grand pa's treat..his 65 birthday.the movie sucks with too much action n romance :p. next went to a hotel called MATSYA, simply awesome.. it had loads of new dishes to be tasted n our full family got a huge table to sit around n gossip. we bought a surprise cake for him and made him to cut it..everybody sang the happy bday song,it was really cool. made him feel like a kid lol..also it was rakshabhandhan n all sisters tied rakhis to all their bro's.they got a good collection....
all cousins had a good time.. this was a really good re-union after a long time.. enjoyed like hell this trip.. tonight have to leave to coll..cha gonna miss home made food!!!!

SAKSHAMA '08

hi friends,
SAKSHAMA is my department's technical sumposium to be held on september 27..it is a sanskrit word which means realise your potential.
i was assigned to design a brochure for the sponsors,n i was able to complete it within the stipulated time of three days (i got two days O.D(on duty))for the same..its a simple one with twenty pages which i did it along with my friend arjun.it is to be presented to the sponsors,so that they have an idea about what is going on n how will they be benefitted by sponsoring us..
we got it printed n the seniors are already in chennai n bangalore for the sponsorship purposes..
i am just uploading a few pages for the sneek peek..
